Since last October, Jean-François Cariou, an expert in embedded software development, has joined Marinelec Technologies. This strategic hire reinforces the engineering team and brings new momentum to the company’s maritime safety projects.

A rich background in embedded systems

At 56 years old, Jean-François brings with him over 30 years of experience in embedded systems. With a postgraduate degree in electronics, he began his career at Ifremer before gaining experience in telecoms, defense, and more recently the automotive sector, where he had been developing driver assistance software since 2017.

From the automotive world to the maritime sector

Switching sectors wasn’t an obvious move, but Marinelec’s offer convinced him. “What attracted me was the human scale of the company and the opportunity to follow a project from start to finish.” A freedom and closeness to the product that he had lost in larger corporations.

The standards may differ, but the level of requirement remains the same. Jean-François especially highlights the different work approach: more flexible, more direct. “We adapt our method to the needs of the project. And we communicate daily with the design office.”

A pragmatic approach to development

At Marinelec, Jean-François particularly appreciates the freedom in his working methods. “We’re not boxed into rigid processes. We can adapt our approach based on the project’s needs,” he explains. This flexibility results in direct, daily collaboration with the design office team.

He is currently working on a new fire detection system, focusing mainly on the main electronic board. “I handle software development, but I’m also involved in discussions about the overall product architecture. It’s this big-picture view that’s really stimulating.”

Technological challenges at sea

With the rise of microcontrollers and the explosion of connected equipment on board, the challenges are many: performance, reliability… and cybersecurity. “We have to design systems that are flexible and adaptable to different types of vessels, while remaining easy to use.”

A valuable expertise for Marinelec

Jean-François’s arrival is part of Marinelec Technologies’ development strategy. His cross-sector experience enriches collective thinking and strengthens the company’s capacity for innovation in a constantly evolving maritime environment.
